A look at the flowers, traditions, and community behind Día de los Muertos.
Every year, as October comes to an end, something special happens at The Original Los Angeles Flower Market.
The stalls begin filling with bright orange and yellow marigolds, seasonal flowers, and customers preparing for one of the most meaningful celebrations of the year: Día de los Muertos.
But behind the colorful blooms is a tradition rooted in remembrance, family, and love.
Why Marigolds Matter
Known as cempasúchil in Mexico, marigolds are among the most recognizable symbols of Día de los Muertos.
Their vibrant colors and distinctive fragrance are traditionally believed to help guide the spirits of loved ones back to their families during the celebration.
You'll often find marigolds arranged on ofrendas (altars), woven into garlands, or placed alongside photographs, candles, and meaningful personal items.
While marigolds are closely associated with the celebration, other flowers, including chrysanthemums and carnations, may also be incorporated into arrangements.
Each flower adds beauty and personal meaning to the tribute.
A Market Full of Flowers and Stories
At The Original Los Angeles Flower Market, flowers are more than products. They're part of the traditions and celebrations that bring people together.
Our independent vendors help customers find flowers for everything from small family ofrendas to larger installations.
Many of our vendors are family-owned businesses, bringing generations of floral knowledge and experience to the Market.
As you walk through the stalls, you'll discover the people, products, and stories that make our floral community special.
A Special Día de los Muertos Display at Mellano LA
This year, our friends at Mellano & Company have created a Día de los Muertos altar inside the Market.
Located at Stalls 27–29, the display is a team effort featuring flowers, marigold decorations, and personal touches that reflect the meaning behind the celebration.
It's a beautiful reminder of how flowers can bring people together to honor those we love and remember.
We invite you to stop by, take a closer look, and appreciate the creativity and care behind the display.
